Connected Diversity at the Treasure Coast

Summary

Healthy coastal wetlands clean the water before entering the Baltic Sea, and also act as a carbon sink. They are also important habitats for many protected species. By restoring areas and increasing connectivity between key habitats, the resilience to climate change and other impacts increase.

This project aims to upgrade the Hotspot 29 Vorpommerische Boddenlandschaft and Rostocker Heide in terms of quality, biodiversity and connectivity of wetland biotopes and their resilience to climate change. The goal of the project is the improvement of biodiversity of coastal wetland and marine habitats in the Greifswald Bay and the adjacent coast. Activities include the creation of stepping-stone biotopes, the rewetting the coastal peat lands, the removal of ghost nets and the restoration of seal habitats. Those practical measures shall be accompanied by a broad-scale citizen information and education campaign as well as partnerships with the local landowners.
